Constitutional reform bid pushed - Birmingham News
Constitution reform group lauds founder - Huntsville Times

The man newspapers and others honor in the above named articles, Mr. Bailey Thomson, was a special interest leader in Alabama politics that Alabama lawyers love. After holding a rally in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 2000, Thomson founded the Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform as part of a grass-roots movement for constitutional reform.

Throughout the state, lawyers are working feverishly to gain exclusive control of Alabama's political and judicial system. I challenge you to research the truth on Constitutional Reform. Unfortunately newspapers and lawyers use the uninformed and the naive to promote constitutional reform.

When special interest lawyers control the legislative process nothing good happens. For example, lawyers in the lawyer-dominated Alabama State Legislature recently revised Alabama's Open Meetings Law. The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, The Mobile Press-Register, The Decatur Daily, The Daily Mountain Eagle, The Tuscaloosa News, The New York Times and a host of other newspapers considered that a great event in Alabama politics. Newspaper editors do not understand that the new revised open meetings law COMPLETELY immunizes the entire judicial branch of Alabama government concerning open meetings.

In short, the new Alabama Open Meetings law does NOT apply to the judicial branch of Alabama government. The Separation of Powers is in jeopardy and the checks and balances so important to a republician form of government are gone.

One may ask, "Why does that matter." Alabama's judicial branch (lawyers) is the sole owner of several "rules" committees that control the operation of judicial administration, state courts, legislative committees and millions of tax dollars. The judicial "rules" have the same force and effect as any law passed by the state legislature. Thanks to the newly revised open meetings law the judicial branch is free to change, revise and write new rules without public knowledge or input.

Is this the kind of constitution you want for your children? When the lawyers, that will most certainly control of the Constitutional Convention, complete a new constitution, no one will vote again. The vote authorizing the Constitutional Convention will be the last time the people vote on matters of public concern.

When your children and grandchildren look at you in the future and ask, "How and why in the world did you let lawyers get so powerful." What will be your excuse? Stop an unnecessary and very dangerous constitutional rewrite.
