County requests tax refund delay

Local lawyers file motion opposing firm's $3.5 million fee

Jefferson County asked a judge Friday for permission to delay occupational tax refunds while local lawyers fight the class-action suit's $3.5 million fee to Burr & Forman law firm.

The high court ordered the county to stop collecting from professionals and directed Rochester to order a refund.

Officials have already paid Burr & Forman $3.5 million, 40 percent of the escrow account. Rochester ordered the payment within five days of an Aug. 1 hearing. He also gave the county 45 days to pay the professionals.
