State can't afford two new judgeships,
letter tells Siegelman

Rich Hobson, administrative director of courts, wrote Siegelman in a hand-delivered letter Friday that he won't approve payments for support staff for the new judgeships in Blount-St. Clair counties and Montgomery County circuits. The court system's budget for next year already will require layoffs of 194 support staffers, he said.

Hobson wrote that he doesn't argue with the need for the new judges but believes his priority must be on keeping those already employed in their jobs.
